Even the smartest apartment hunters can get easily suckered.
This blog serves to compile information on Urban American Management, a New Jersey based New York City management company. It is my opinion that this company provides poor service to its tenants. Ideally, I would like to gather news on the company from sources such as the city Office of the Public Advocate, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, as well as articles from the New York Daily News and the New York Post. I was, of course, inspired by my personal experience as an Urban American Management tenant, which can only be described as an absolute nightmare.
I would detail what I dealt with in terms of the hazardous violations in my building and unit, but when I reported them to HPD, Urban American Management chose to harass me in return as opposed to providing repairs. I believe that they are fully aware of what has been going on with my building, and that any specific information about it would give my identity away. It is perfectly reasonable to fear further retaliation and/or harassment from Urban American, especially seeing as they obviously know where I live and have a sizable amount of my personal information on file. Creating this blog took bravery on my part, and I hope that my readers can appreciate this.
This blog was inspired by 10 Midwood, a blog which details the horror of another slumlord-owned NYC building. The name “Slumlord Millionaires” is a play on the movie title “Slumdog Millionaire”. As mentioned, I understand that I may be setting myself up for big trouble with Urban American, but I am practicing my First Amendment right to free speech, all of my sources are cited, and I just want prospective tenants of their buildings to be informed. If restaurant-goers can seek out reviews on local pizza shops via Yelp, then surely apartment hunters have just as much of a right to documented facts, real tenant opinions, and whatever other sources of information I can provide with the goal of tenants’ rights and consumer advocacy.
Simply put, as a former tenant of this company, I do not wish for anyone else to have to deal with what Urban American Management put me and my family through.
You may contact me at email@example.com if you have any questions or comments.
If you are a current or former tenant of Urban American Management, please submit any stories or information that you may have. I promise to keep your identity anonymous as well.
